Configuring Desktop Shortcuts

Depending on how your clinic computers are managed, adding the CHIME Dashboard link to the desktop of every relevant computer in your clinic might be something that can be done centrally. However, there’s also a chance that someone will need to go around and manually add it to each computer.

If you are responsible for managing clinic desktop computers, please follow these steps.

1. Get the clinic specific CHIME Dashboard URL

Every clinic has their own specific URL for their CHIME Dashboard. It usually follows this format…

http://[clinic-name].myclinic.io/

…with the [clinic-name] parameter being unique to each clinic. It is also important to note that, for now, the CHIME Dashboard uses the HTTP and NOT the HTTPS protocol.

Please reach out to your CHIME account manager to get the unique CHIME Dashboard link for your clinic.

2. Create a standard Chrome application shortcut

Our preference is that you use the Chrome browser to access the CHIME Dashboard. If this is not possible at your clinic, please skip this step and go to Step 3. Otherwise…

  1. Download the CHIME icon to your desktop from here: https://chimeclinic.com/favicon.ico

  2. Find the Chrome browser application (usually located in the Program Files folder) on your computer

  3. Right click on it, then find and click the “Create shortcut” option from the menu

    1. You might get a warning saying that the shortcut can not be placed inside the same folder as the original application, but can be placed on the desktop

    2. If the shortcut was placed inside the same folder, drag it to the desktop

  4. Find the new Chrome application shortcut that you just created, right click on it, find and click the “Properties” option from the menu

  5. Make sure your are in the “Shortcut” section of the Properties window

  6. Find the “Target” input field and add the clinic specific CHIME Dashboard URL from Step 1 after the target path, preceded by a space

    1. If the “Target” input field had the following value…
      "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
…add the clinic specific CHIME Dashboard URL from Step 1 so that it looks like this
      "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" http://[clinic-name].myclinic.io/

    2. Make sure to replace the [clinic-name] property with the relevant clinic name as provided to you by your CHIME account manager

    3. Make sure that the CHIME Dashboard URL is outside the quotation marks that contain the target path to chrome.exe

  7. While still in the “Shortcut” section of the Properties window you can change the shortcut icon by clicking the “Change Icon…” button and selecting the favicon.ico file you downloaded earlier.

  8. Finally switch to the “General” section of the Properties window and change the name of the shortcut to “CHIME”

  9. Click the “OK” button to save all of the changes

  10. Test the new Chrome application shortcut that you just created by double clicking on it, it should automatically open the CHIME Dashboard URL from Step 1

3. Create a standard Windows URL shortcut file

IMPORTANT: only do this step if you are not able to create the Chrome application shortcut described in Step 2. If you completed Step 2, please skip this step and go to Step 4.

  1. Download the CHIME icon to your desktop from here: https://chimeclinic.com/favicon.ico

  2. Open your default browser and type in clinic specific CHIME Dashboard URL from Step 1

  3. Minimize the browser window so that the desktop is visible

  4. Click into the URL bar of the browser window and make sure that the entire URL is highlighted / selected

  5. Click, hold and drag the URL to the desktop

  6. Find the new URL shortcut that you just created, right click on it, find and click the “Properties” option from the menu

  7. To change the icon, make sure you are in the “Web Document” section of the Properties window, find and click the “Change Icon…” button and select the favicon.ico file you downloaded earlier.

  8. Switch to the “General” section of the Properties window and change the name of the shortcut to “CHIME”

  9. Click the “OK” button to save all of the changes

  10. Test the new URL shortcut that you just created by double clicking on it, it should automatically open the CHIME Dashboard URL from Step 1

4. Get the shortcut onto every relevant computer

Once you have one of the two options working the next question is how to get the CHIME Dashboard shortcut onto every computer. Here are your options:

  1. Follow Step 2 (or 3) on every relevant computer

  2. Load the shortcut that you created in Step 2 (or 3) onto a USB key, then go around and drag the shortcut from the USB key to the desktops of every relevant computer

  3. If your computers are connected to a domain, and you have the ability to configure a Group Policy, then you should be able to push the shortcut you created in Step 2 (or 3) to every relevant computer’s desktop automatically
