Can patients update their details directly on the CHIME Check-in Kiosk?

The CHIME Check-in Kiosk was designed to make the check-in process fast, intuitive and secure to ensure a seamless experience for patients of all abilities. As such, whenever patients needs to update their details (contact information, health card number, etc.) they are redirected to the reception desk to perform that task. Some clinics may wonder if patients can update their details directly on the CHIME Check-in Kiosk.

Having patients update their details directly on the CHIME Check-in Kiosk presents two obstacles.

  1. As previously mentioned we designed the kiosk patient experience to be as quick, easy and efficient to use as possible. As such we purposely tried to avoid having functionality that would require patients to use a keyboard to enter any kind of letters / numbers as that could introduce delays and add bottlenecks at the kiosk.

  2. However, the biggest challenge with this functionality would be integrating with a clinics EMR in a consistent and reliable manner. While we are able to pull data from your EMR (and in some cases push minor changes like updating the appointment status) using the kiosk to push changes to the demographic record introduces significant added complexity. For example, if a parent accidentally enters their own HIN for their child's profile, this is something an automated system would not be able to reliably catch as the HIN itself would be valid. For sensitive data like this, our experience tells us that it's best to have a second pair of eyes to verify that everything is correct.

In conclusion, the CHIME Check-in Kiosk currently does not allow patients to update their details directly on the kiosk as part of the check-in process.
